DESCRIPTION

NSCAD University advanced the development of a sustainable, locally rooted textile supply chain by creating the Flaxmobile—a mobile fibre-flax processing and education facility that travelled to Nova Scotian communities. The project supported farmers and craftspeople in cultivating fibre flax, the plant source of linen, and helped them develop material prototypes that demonstrate the potential of locally grown fibres. Through workshops, demonstrations, and community outreach, the Flaxmobile strengthened public understanding of sustainable textiles, reduced reliance on imported materials and their associated emissions, and promoted carbon sequestration through plant cultivation. By connecting growers, fibre mills, makers, and consumers, the project helps lay the groundwork for a resilient, low-carbon textile economy in the province.
