DESCRIPTION

Feed Nova Scotia led a collaborative effort with Halifax Regional Municipality’s Community Safety office and the Halifax Food Policy Alliance to strengthen community emergency preparedness and build a more resilient local food system. The project focused on developing healthier, locally sourced emergency food kits that can be stockpiled ahead of storms and other climate-related disruptions. By creating pre-storm food kits—complete with guidance on where to shelter, how to prepare food safely during outages, and how to share resources in an emergency—the project will help communities better withstand crises while reducing dependence on imported, highly processed foods. Through this work, the initiative supported local producers, improved access to nutritious food during emergencies, and advanced a more coordinated, community-centred approach to disaster readiness across the Halifax region.
